2002-2005: ESNACIFOR Aid Helps Restore The Canal
The Canal area was planted with red mangrove propagules in sections over a period of several years. The propagules had to be imported from Roatan Island as their was no local source left after Hurricane Mitch. Edguardo Ortega, the Environmental Manager for Guanaja Island, recals working on this project and is proud to see the living trees which now produce many thousands of propagules each year. Also planted was a corner area of NE Bight. We are now able to pick propagules from these areas for our ongoing hand planting efforts.
